Best practices

  • Library Opening Hours are from 10.00am to 7.00pm so that student and teachers can use the library after classes are over. As we have limited staff, we divide the working hours from 10.00am to 4.00pm and 12.00am to 7.00pm and staffs are engaged accordingly.
  • Library is opened for six days in a week.
  • We have separate sections for Periodicals, Reading, References, Rare books, Back-Volumes, Post-Graduate Book issue, Degree Book issue (major) and General Book issue like University library. We have reading facility in each section.
  • Usually we provide two cards to each student. But we issue two Extra cards to students having Honours in subjects like Hindi, Persian/Arabic, Sanskrit, Bengali, Boro as the number is less.
  • We publish a four pages User Guide which contains DDC numbers, how to see a Catalogue Card, Use of OPAC, how to give requisition for a book and other information of the library in brief.
  • We keep career literature like (JET,NET, AIEEE, CAT, GK etc) in the reading room. They are only for reading room use.
  • We provide contents Alert service (Photocopy) of important journals as part of the Current Awareness Service (CAS) to the academic departments of the college. Through this service, contents pages of learned journals and other important publications are scanned and sent to the faculties for academic purpose
  • Provide Consultancy to
    • The Students of Library & Information Science in preparing their Master’s degree dissertation
    • Library professionals coming from other parts of the state & the students of Library & Information Science about the SOUL Software.
    • Research Scholars coming from other state and abroad.
  • Section in-charge of each section is asked to note down the names of the frequently asked books and we try to purchase those books.
  • We display the list as well as the cover pages of recent arrivals in the display stand.
  • List of journals we subscribed are displayed in the Student Notice Boards.
  • Application of IT for library automation. At present we are concentrating on Retrospective Conversion, Data entry, Office work, giving access to Library Catalogues through OPAC, Bar Coding & Computerized Circulation both for faculty & students. Faculty can access library catalogues from their departments as well as their library accounts through campus LAN. Each faculty has been given a computer generated membership code through which they can access their accounts.
  • Providing Information Retrieval Services like Internet, CAS, SDI at this moment.
  • Photo-stat facility for all which is a source of revenue of the library.
  • Entry register is maintained to keep the record of the number of every day user.
  • Visitor diary is maintained.
  • Two newspapers are displayed in the paper stand at the entrance lobby.
  • Dictionaries are kept in the stand in different places for the readers use.
  • Suggestion box is kept in a prominent place with the hope to get feed back from the readers.
  • Out side readers can use the library with due permission from the Librarian. They are provided only with reading and photocopy facilities.
  • We apply physical verification method for stock taking. We do stack verification during vacations usually and after every five years. At the timeof stack verification we also weed out old edition of texts, damaged & brittle books, unused books and etc.
  • We have a Library Advisory Committee consisting of 10 members. On the committee, 8 members are from faculty. Principal is the chairman of the committee and Librarian act as the convener.
  • User’s education is delivered to the student from time to time.
